The story of the Holy Convent Saint George the Great-Martyr and Trophy bearer begins from the year 1979 in a miraculous way. The Great Martyr Saint George himself appeared in a vision to the then Sister Nectaria Rasophora Nun, today’s Foundress, and Abbess Paisia Great-Schema Nun, of our Holy Convent.

One day Rasophora Nun, Nectaria saw that she found herself in front of a large uphill green field. At the top of the field was standing a young tall monk, wearing monastic garments and a monk’s round hat on his head with a large red cross on it. The monk stood motionless and looked at the whole area. The nun Nectaria ascends the field, to approach him and learn more. Arriving next to him she saw his face and as a hagiographer, she realized who He was; the Great-Martyr Saint George the Trophy bearer, and made her cross out of awe.

Saint George said to her seriously and imperatively, “I want you to build my Monastery for me again”. In this vision much more happened and was said but which is not present to be told.

After one week or so in the same way Saint George reappeared to Nun Nectaria and told her, “I told you to build my Monastery”. This time nun Nectaria saw again the same uphill greenfield, but the view she saw across in the distance was the sea.

After this second appearance of the Saint, Sister Nectaria nun addressed her Spiritual Father and told him the above two visions. The Spiritual advised her to pray and God would show her what to do.

After another week, in the same way, Saint George the Great Martyr reappeared for the third time to Rasophora Nun Nectaria and he said in a more sternly and imperatively way, as an order; “Go and build my Monastery!”

So, she then received a Blessing from her Spiritual Father, prayed to Saint George, and began the search for the field she had seen in the three visions. Her search lasted nearly a whole year, all over Hellas. Wherever she heard there was land for sale she went to see if it was similar to what she had been indicated.

The Nun Nectaria on the eve of her feast day, 8th of November in her prayers, addressed Saint Fanourios to help her find the land which she was searching for a nearly a year. That night Saint Fanourios appeared to her and said “Andrew will show it to you and Andrew will give it to you”. The next morning, on the day of her Name’s Day of Saint Nectarios Pentapoleos the Miracle-Worker, she was visited by two spiritual brethren to wish her, Levkios Poliviou and Christina X. Levkios knew about the visions of nun Nectaria, and his gift that day was to show her a new spot that was selling land and which he believed had some similarities to the description.

On the road, it was torrentially downpouring and two tires burst one after the other. After hours of difficulties and wet, they arrived at a small café at an intersection of a country road. Arriving Levkios went and found a man that would show them some plots of land that were for sale in the area, and his name was Andrew. Passing a small canyon the sea appeared in front of them. At one point there was a recently opened dirt road from the village community. Right in front of the road was found the field identical to the one indicated by Saint George. They headed straight to the nearby village where the owner lived and his name was Andrew just as Saint Fanourios had mentioned the day before.

Immediately she bought the land giving the entire amount of money from the account of her father Odysseus, and began the construction of the current Convent, with her personal family’s wealth, with charitable funds and her tireless work, in Hagiography and teaching Private English language lessons. After many temptations but also great miracles of the Great Martyr, Saint George the Trophy bearer, today’s Convent was Erected in His Name exactly as he had requested.

In the year 1999, the Convent was Donated by the Foundress, as a Metochion to the Holy Monastery Esfigmeno, in the Holy Mountain of Athos. The Holy Convent of Saint George the Great Martyr and Trophy bearer, Avlides, follows the Typical of Mount Athos and has a small number of Sister-Hood under the spiritual guidance and supervision of the Holy Foundress and first Abbess, Paisia Great-Schema Nun.
