THE   STORY   OF   THE   KOMVOSKINI

The Orthodox Komvoskini is made out of woolen thread with numbered knots, which is used for the convenience of counting Prayers for the Orthodox Monastic Hood, who pray every day from morning to night and conversely, in concentrating the mind on the practice of Mental Prayer. It can also be used by every Orthodox Christian.

The Komvoskini was suggested and shown by Archangel Raphael to Osios Pachomius, the Founder of the Coenobitic Monastic Life in the Desert of Thebes, in Egypt. When Osios Pachomius was tying knots on a string to keep the number of prayers and prostrations he made, at night the demon went and untied the knots so to hurt him. Then, Archangel Raphael appeared to Osios Pachomius and showed him how to make each knot, forming nine crosses, in the form of the nine Angelic Celestial Orders saying the Prayer of Jesus; “Lord Jesus Christ Son of God Have Mercy Upon Me”. From henceforth the woolen Komvoskini became the Fiery Sword of the Orthodox Monasticism against the demons and a great Protection of the Orthodox Christians who wears it or uses it for praying or even places it in various parts, for protection from demonic forces.

It is made from woolen thread to remind the Logical Sheep of Jesus Christ (John: Chap.10, Verse 11). Today it is also made from synthetic wool due to many of our fellow human beings, being allergic. It is made in such a way that each knot is crossed nine times, with nine prayers in the form of the nine Angelic Celestial Orders. It has a black colour to remind each of the mourning of sins and carries a Cross to remind of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ for the Salvation of Mankind. The black colour is always used by Orthodox Monasticism, while Secular Orthodox Christians wear different colours. At its end, sometimes the woolen Komvoskini has a tassel that is used to wipe the tears of repentance (Luke: Chap. 7, Verse 44).

Usually, it is worn on the left wrist to repel demon attacks, and many miracles of protection from major accidents and fraud have been recorded. Orthodox Christians use the woolen Komvoskini of 12 knots, which is either as rings, or as amulets (phylacto) with a cross, it symbolizes the 12 Apostles, and the woolen Komvoskini of 33 knots which is around the wrist to protect their daily actions symbolizes the earthly years of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Orthodox monks/nuns always carry a Komvoskini in their belts as weapons against 3000 demons who they fight each one, every day. They use the woolen Komvoskini of 100 knots, known as katostari, the 150 knots known as aekatonpenintari, and the 300 knots, known as triakosari. With the Komvoskini they count every day their prayers and prostrations.

THE SOLDIER

Once, visited our Holy Convent a family, which had a young lad that was about to leave to do his Military Service for his Homeland. After they had worshipped the Icon of Saint George the Trophybearer, they headed for our Holy Convent’s Exhibition of Handicrafts and bought a Komvoskini for the wrist, of their son, so as to protect him in the Army where he was about to be ranked.

The young man was classified in the Armoured Arms Unit. His specialty was to load the tanks' machine guns with missiles. One day while he was on the drill, he put the missile in the barrel but forgot to pull his hand out quickly. As soon as the missile was placed the door of the barrel automatically sealed in a flash and it would have cut off his hand. But suddenly he felt an invisible hand grabbing hold of his elbow and pulling it hardback.

It was the hand that wore the Komvoskini; he would have lost his hand if Saint George had not intervened in a flash!

GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEE

Once visited our Holy Convent a lady which was a high-ranking government official. She worshipped our icon of Saint George the Trophybearer and after went to the Exhibition of the handicraft of the Convent and bought a Komvoskini of the wrist for a blessing of the Saint.

After a while, the civil servant, one day when she had a heavy workload; signing important official documents of Public orders after signing enough, reached to a multi-page document and hears the thunderous and urging voice of a Saint saying… “Do not sign it”. The woman froze and left the pen fall from her hand. She looked around her out of habit and her gaze fell on the Komvoskini she was wearing on the hand she signed.

Indeed, this document was problematic and if she had signed it, she would have been sent to Account for her doings, with very unpleasant consequences!

PRAYER

Once a woman visited our Holy Convent who after worshipping the Icon of Saint George the Trophybearer, went to the Exhibition of our Sisterhood’s handicrafts and bought a hundred-knot Komvoskini to say the ‘Prayer of Jesus’.

One Sunday she went to Church, as usual, In the Divine Liturgy and by habit took out her Komvoskini to pray. After a while, she suddenly sees a small hairy creature with black hair like a hedgehog entering the Church like lightning and grabbing twice the Komvoskini that hung from her hand while she was saying the ‘Prayer of Jesus.

In spite of the woman’s fright, her reflectiveness held onto the Komvoskini tightly, and the demon disappeared outside the Church in a flash as he entered.
